Trips to the airport can reveal some very interesting or unusual visitors. This portfolio will highlight a variety of aircraft that I have run across that you would not find everyday at your local airport.
Fairchild Republic A-10C Thunderbolt II at Tri-Cities Airport
A pair of Fairchild Republic A-10C Thunderbolt II from the 175th Wing of the Maryland Air National Guard sitting on the ramp at Tri-Cities Airport (KTRI). The Warthogs were in town to perform the pre-race flyover at the Food City 500 NASCAR Cup race at Bristol Motor Speedway. I stopped by the airport on Saturday night as I made my way home after the Xfinity race at BMS. I returned to Tri-Cities Airport on Monday morning to get a few daylight shots of the Warthogs before they departed back for home later in the day.

McDonnell Douglas T-45C Goshawk & Boeing-Stearman PT-17
Thanks to a heads-up call from a friend, I was aware of a US Navy McDonnell Douglas T-45C Goshawk was heading towards Tri-Cities Airport. Luckily, I just happened to be in Blountville, TN which is in the Final Approach flight path to Tri-Cities Airport. I was able to run out into an area with a clear sky view in time to catch the Goshawk passing overhead.
I then ran over to the airport to get ground shots of the Goshawk. While I was there, I watched the crew grab their travel bags and depart for the evening.
Shortly after, a Stearman PT-17 biplane landed and parked next to the Goshawk. Giving me the opportunity to photograph two military trainers together that were 54 years apart in age.

The crew of the Goshawk make a surprise return to their aircraft. For just a moment I got excited they might be preparing to depart. 25Oct24
Alas, they were not departing. The crew opened a hatch on the bottom of the Goshawk and pulled out their travel bags. 25Oct24

I returned to my car and grabbed one last shot of the US Navy McDonnell Douglas T-45C Goshawk (CARP106, 165085) sitting on the ramp. 25Oct24
Sitting in my car preparing to depart for home, I hear the distinct sound of a radial engine. I jump out, grab my camera in time to catch this Boeing-Steaman PT-17 biplane making a fighter break over the field. 25Oct24

It was a good thing he had the cockpit cover on. I watched some fuel spill out and run down the wing and drip onto the cockpit cover. That would make for a messy/smelly seat. 25Oct24
